Brag About Yourself: How to Write a Website Bio Without Feeling Icky

I just… really hate talking about myself.

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard this from a client, I could close up shop.

But hey! I totally get it! Talking about ourselves can feel weird and uncomfortable. Unfortunately, if you want to grow your business and find new connections, you’re going to have to share all of the reasons why you’re so great.

Let’s talk about how to write your website bio in a way that won’t make your stomach hurt or cause your website visitors to roll their eyes.

Why Do I Need a Bio in the First Place?

Whether you’re leading a Fortune 500 company or opening your first small business, there will be times when you need to write a bio for yourself. It’s especially important for small business owners and entrepreneurs. After all, why should your consumers trust you if they don’t even know who you are?

A great website bio will also help attract potential customers, humanize your brand, and improve your website’s SEO. Basically, whether it feels weird or not, you need to do it. So, grab a pen and let’s get to work writing a bio that will make people remember you!

What to Include in a Website Bio

First things first, don’t overthink this. I know that’s easier said than done, but seriously. You’re probably making it harder than you think.

Share Your Credentials But Make it About Your Audience

A great website bio will show off your credentials (and personality if you want!) and explain to your audience why your expertise will help them.

Keep this in mind: your bio is about you, but it shouldn’t be written about you.

Let me explain.

Your bio is a place to brag about yourself and share your accomplishments in a way that explains why your achievements matter to your audience. For example, when you talk about your Master’s Degree, explain why that matters to your consumer. Emily uses her MBA in Business Leadership to help her clients craft unshakeable business plans!

See what I did there? I mentioned Emily’s MBA but explained why it mattered to her clients in the same sentence.

Because the truth is, it’s human nature to center things around yourself. People will read your bio to find out why it matters to them

Build Trust With Your Reader

You want people to hire you or buy your products because you’re an expert in your field. Showcase your skills, expertise, and awards in a way that will paint you as the total badass expert you are!

Don’t be afraid to show how passionate you are about your craft here, too. Knowing that you live and breathe your business will show that you take it seriously. People want to hire people who take pride in their work because that means you’ll do a great job for them.

Share Personal Details

No, I don’t mean TMI details. But sharing personal details, like He loves anime and Xbox!, will help humanize you to your audience.

Especially if you’re selling a service like business coaching or photography, sharing these personal details will help form a connection with your audience. Knowing that you also like to watch Abbott Elementary or that you love to vacation at the Jersey Shore will give you something to bond over during those opening discussions.

People want to work with people, especially people they relate to. Sharing some personal anecdotes will help make that happen.

Keep It Short

Even though you are probably the coolest person in the world, and you’ve done a lot of really cool shit, you need to keep it concise.

No one wants to read a 3-page biography about their next website copywriter. Most bios should only be about 150-300 words.

Read it Out Loud

After you’ve written your bio, read it out loud a few times. Not only will this help you catch any typos, but it will also give you a feel for how it all flows together. If it sounds weird when you read it out loud, workshop the sentences a bit until you’ve nailed the voice and tone you want.

Add Industry Keywords

Don’t keyword stuff your bio, but don’t overlook its SEO importance either. When writing your website bio, be sure to include industry keywords to boost your chances of landing on the right search results page.

You can do keyword research on Google or through a tool like KeySearch* to ensure you’re using the words your intended audience wants.

Update It Often

We’re all works in progress, so why shouldn’t our bios be, too? Don’t forget to revisit your bio every once in a while. Refresh it with new accomplishments, interests, or keywords.
