Just Write It: Does Your Website Need a Blog?

With all of the craziness going on with social media these days, I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter around long-form written content, specifically blogs.

So, what’s the deal? Are blogs back? Were they ever really dead to begin with? And does every business need one? I have a lot of thoughts (surprise!), so let’s get into it.

The Role of Blogs in a Diversified Content Marketing Strategy

When you think of a blog, what do you think of? A diary? A LiveJournal (remember those?!)? That’s probably about the time blogging burst onto the scene, but now, blogging is so much more than it used to be.

In today’s digital age, blogs are a great way to capture more organic traffic, build a community with your audience, and share your knowledge in bite-size chunks of digestible content. When paired with a well-managed social media presence, a blog full of quality content can take your marketing to the next level.

What Are the Benefits of Having a Blog?

Blogs aren’t just for writing out your feelings or sharing your thoughts on the latest world news. Although, they can be if that’s what aligns with your business!

Instead, use your business’s blog as an extension of your existing marketing efforts. Let it be a place where you dive a little bit deeper into your knowledge than the surface level content you post on social media or highlight in your email sequences.

Speaking of social media, where are you directing people to go after they love a post or follow you? Probably your website, right? Google’s Search Engine Results Pages (“SERP”) is another place you can find organic traffic to direct to your website.

You know what Google’s algorithms love to push to the top of the SERP? Quality written content that is optimized for search engine crawlers. (Does SEO sound familiar? That’s literally what it means – Search Engine Optimization. It’s content that has been optimized for search engines!)

So, not only will your blog help you build a community with your audience and be a great place to highlight your knowledge, expertise, and authority, but it’s also the perfect partner to improve your SERP ranking.

Do You Really Need a Blog?

As much as I’m a huge blog fan, I wholeheartedly believe that not every business needs one. Before pouring your time and attention into writing awesome long-form content, ask yourself these questions.

1. What are your business goals?
Do your goals align with the return on investment you’ll get from a blog? Is more organic traffic to your website the result you’re looking for? If it’s not a high priority right now, perhaps put a pin in your blog ambitions.

2. What does your audience want to see?

If your target audience isn’t full of readers (or even content skimmers!), then writing long-form content probably isn’t the best route to take. Blogs require people to read them. They aren’t just a place to put your thoughts. Their main goal should be to benefit your audience, either by educating them, enlightening them, or engaging with them.

3. What resources do you have available to commit to blogging?

Like any business decision, you have to consider your resources. Do you have the time, skills, and budget to make this happen? Is your website set up to include a blog? Do you understand how to do SEO research to make sure you’ll even reach the right people?

Writing a blog that appeals to both your human readers and the algorithm involves so much more than stuffing a bunch of keywords into your content. You have to be prepared for that task. If you don’t understand how it works and don’t have the time or desire to learn, do you have the budget to outsource this task?
